1-800 NY Bulbs Announces It Will No Longer Sell Incandescent Bulbs
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 7, 2008 -- 1 800 NY Bulbs, a national light bulb distributor based out of Mamaroneck, NY has announced that it will become the first online retailer of light bulbs to permanently remove incandescent light bulbs from their website. The decision came from growing national concern about green alternatives to traditional lighting. While there are several states currently pushing towards bans of incandescent bulbs in the near future and a bill has passed in Congress regarding the gradual phasing out of these bulbs, NY Bulbs has decided not to wait.
1 800 NY Bulbs has permanently removed all standard incandescent light bulbs from its website, www.NYBULBS.com to send the message that, with such a viable alternative to them, it is socially irresponsible to continue selling these bulbs on the internet. "It is clear that incandescent bulbs are going to be phased out in the near future so we have decided to be proactive when it comes to being environmentally responsible. We can't simply wait to be forced to make the transition to a lighting alternative that is so obviously superior to what's currently being used," says president Randall Satin. He goes on to say that making the transition to CFLs is met with resistance from some because of the greater initial cost of purchasing them, but in the long run they will save users money on both their energy bill and in replacing light bulbs.
In place of standard incandescent light bulbs, which have remained relatively unchanged for over 100 years, is the compact fluorescent light bulb or CFL. CFLs are essentially a miniature version of a full-size fluorescent bulb commonly found in factories and schools however they give off a light similar to that of a common incandescent bulb. They cost more than a standard light bulb but use one-third the electricity to operate and last ten times longer than an incandescent light bulb.
Several states and counties have followed in the footsteps of countries such as Australia and Canada, and have made the decision to phase out incandescent light bulbs by a certain date. The US Energy Bill plans to phase out these energy inefficient light bulbs my requiring higher energy standards on them, mandating that bulbs be 70 percent more efficient by 2020. The reasoning behind these bans and "phase outs" are attempts to both save money for consumers and to eliminate carbon dioxide emitted by coal-fired power plants.
1 800 NY Bulbs' decision to remove incandescent bulbs from its website is a rare instance in which a company preempts the government in taking it upon themselves to stop selling an otherwise profitable product in the name of environmental responsibility.
