artnet Online Auctions ? Contemporary Color Photographs Sale

New York / Berlin (PRWEB) July 14, 2008 -- From July 14-31, artnet Online Auctions (www.artnetonlineauctions.com) will offer over 100 contemporary color photographs by 50 renowned artists including William Eggleston, Nan Goldin, Eliot Porter, Thomas Ruff and William Wegman.

Leading the sale is an outstanding group of photographs from the 1950s, including two classic urban scenes by modernist photographer Marvin E. Newman, Coney Island I and Coney Island II, 1953 (estimate: $3,000-4,000 each). In sharp contrast is Train 22 Near Watuga, 1955-59, a rural landscape of the American south by the great train photographer O. Winston Link (estimate: $5,000-6,000).

The sale also features a remarkable selection of photographs from the 1960s, including ten vintage color prints of NASA?s historic lunar landing photographed by Neil Armstrong. Among the highlights of this group is the iconic image Astronaut Buzz Aldrin on the Lunar Surface by the US Flag, 1969 (estimate: $1,200-1,800). Also offered in this section is a portfolio of eight portraits of Marilyn Monroe photographed by George Barris at the Santa Monica beach in 1962, each signed by the artist (estimate: $3,500-4,500). Other works include River Edge at Sunset, 1962, a glowing dye transfer print by Eliot Porter (estimate: $3,000-4,000), and Route 66, Albuquerque, 1969, a classic chromogenic print by Ernst Haas (estimate: $5,000-6,000).

Also offered in the sale are photographs from the heyday of new color photography in the 1970s to the 1990s, including works by William Eggleston, David Graham, Richard Misrach and Richard Pare. Four works by William Eggleston from 1971 to 1996 demonstrate the artist?s extraordinary range, from the eerie Halloween, 1971 (estimate: $20,000-30,000) to the idyllic Untitled, Rose Triptych, 1981 (estimate: $15,000-20,000). This section also includes three works by Richard Pare, all of which were featured in the 2007 Museum of Modern Art exhibition, The Lost Vanguard: Russian Modernist Architecture 1922-1932, including Shabolovka Radio Tower, 1998, the catalogue cover image (estimate: $9,500-11,000). Three works by Richard Misrach explore the uneasy relationship between man and nature, and four photographs from David Graham?s ?Land of the Free? series capture the colorful and surreal aspects of American life.

Recent contemporary highlights include works by Nan Goldin, Nobuyoshi Araki, Scott Peterman and Alec Soth. Joanna Topless at the Château Le Bastion, 2000, by Nan Goldin reflects the ?outsider? perspective that permeates the artist?s work (estimate: $3,500-4,500). Duckworth, 2000, a snowy landscape by Scott Peterman (estimate: $3,000-5,000) contrasts starkly with NY_11D, 2007, a glittering cityscape of monumental scale by the same artist (size: 50 x 40 in., 127 x 101.6 cm.; estimate: $8,000-10,000).

Rounding out the sale is a selection of works ushering in the digital age by Julie Blackmon, Martin Denker, Thomas Ruff, and Vik Muniz. Before the Storm, 2007, is one of three domestic scenes by Julie Blackmon (estimate: $4,000-5,000) that combine digital manipulation with richly saturated hues to create a surrealistic effect. Three works by Martin Denker, a student of Thomas Ruff?s, push the exploration of digital media to new levels, including HollywoodPestControl, 2007, a chromogenic print bursting with color and complexity. Vik Muniz blurs the boundaries between art and artifice in his digital interpretation of Cézanne?s masterpiece, Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley (after Cézanne, 1882-85), 2006 (estimate: $6,000-8,000).

?The works offered in this sale chronicle the evolution of color photography from the 1950s to the present? said Hans Neuendorf, CEO of artnet. ?We are pleased to offer such a comprehensive collection representing the finest in this medium.?
